Google Chrome’s latest update is good news on paper. After all, the internet giant New policy on autoplaying videos for the browser means that while they still automatically play on many sites, the sound has now been muted. It’s a good thing, isn’t it?
Well, it does, there is only one small problem for those who like web games – the sound is also muted.
This effectively makes a bunch of web games unplayable, and suffice to say the creators don’t have it. Bennett Foddy, the designer of popular titles like Getting Over It, said the update is a “disaster for web games and audio art.” Meanwhile, Sausage Roll maestro Stephen Lavelle noted that the audio in all of his HMTL-based games was broken.
There is currently no word from Google on this, so we don’t know if they are considering fixing the issue. The best designers have at the moment is a temporary workaround, although it is not ideal.
Ah fucking sake. I had just started last year starting to believe I could reliably use audio in the browser (after years of reluctance). So much for that⦠looks like the chrome update also broke all the audio in my html5 games. https://t.co/gT6n9pz0VT
