
As part of Google Arts & Culture’s ongoing experiments with machine learning, a new “Giga Manga” web app will now let you create your own manga characters with a simple sketch.
Announced as part of Manga Out Of The Box’s broader collaboration with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Google has enlisted 12 of Japan’s top cultural institutions to showcase this form of art. ‘art. With Giga Manga, you will be able to create your own manga-style ink drawings using machine learning. In this unique experience, all you need to do is sketch a few simple lines and add a few splashes of color, then let machine learning do the rest. You can also draw a freeform to further customize your creation. And when you’re done, the tool will help you discover manga similar to the one you drew.
The web app features a canvas where you draw or sketch a few lines before machine learning kicks in and “completes” the manga-style character for you. Final results may vary depending on how long you spend drawing. Google’s own example says it’s all done for you, but in practice the “magic pen” helps provide an outline that you can edit and adjust using the basic artboard tools Google offers.
